Buying on Ebay from USA

Hi,
I was thinking of buying a digital camera on Ebay from USA. Seller says it states on parcel 'gift'. Will there be extra taxes applied to this camera when it reaches here?
 
I have bought many items on ebay from abroad (USA, China, Germany) and have yet to be hit with levies or duties or whatever.
 
..Apparently, if the item posted is designated as a "gift" it doesn't become liable for VAT or import duties..or so I'm told...daithi
 
I wouldn't be so sure. Customs are catching more and more goods bought online and subject to tax and duties on import into the country. Having them marked "gift" doesn't guarantee anything.
 
i know someone who has been caught twice for duties - both times were when the seller used a courier company such as dhl etc
