Anyone done this? With the exchange rate so good there's big savings to be made.

How much will I be hit for on duty? Any ideas?

If you consider it an important issue check that the warranty on items purchased in this manner apply if they are shipped to Ireland.

might be of interest to you.

Thanks Clubman.

Is there any way of calculating excatly what I'll be charged if my shipment is assessed?

Gabriel, from what I've heard recently, you're as good as guaranteed to be assessed and get hit for customs, vat etc. if importing from the US, particularly a fairly big package like a laptop.

I suppose there's the possibility I won't be assessed but I'm sure you're probably right sherman. I'd just like to be able to calculate (reliably) whether or not the given $ price plus the duty would still be a saving over buying it here.

I'm just wondering is it one standard rate on all goods or different rates on different classifications of goods?

Amazon.com will ship books & CD's, DVDs to Ireland (delivery is very expensive but the super weak $ compensates) .. but as far as I know any Electronic goods will only be shipped to a US Address .. no way round this I don't think - so you can't buy from Amazon

Other online retailers may ship to Ireland - and then the above caveats apply ... but I'm pretty sure that Amazon will not sell you a laptop without a US delivery address
