Buying house with old septic tank - registration question

I have just become aware of the workings of the new registration system surrounding septic tanks. The one at this property is old, and will most likely require upgrading to be compliant with the new laws, I am prepared for that.
The question I have is, if the vendors have not registered the tank, what happens? As I understand it, the deadline for registration has passed, and the deadline for receiving any grants to help with the costs has also passed.
I will try to ascertain next week whether or not it has already been registered. If it has, can we, as the new owners, avail of the grants if work needs to be done upon inspection? If it has not been registered, what will happen as regards the grant? Would we still be eligible if we register it on completion? Would we be better to insist the owners registered it now, even though the date for the grant has passed?
The survey has been done and the tank is working fine as far as can be seen, but the surveyor did warn us that there may be problems down the line. The house is old so we anticipated a few issues popping up in the survey. It is really the whole registration issue that has me confused and a bit worried. Hopefully someone here can advise, or point me in the right direction.

That is my understanding of it. I presume that you have not yet completed the sale yet. Your solicitor should seek confirmation as to whether it is registered or not. It could cost between 3 and 7K to bring it up to spec. Do not despair yet as all may have been done particularly if owner was anyway shrewd he would have registered it so as to make it more saleable for the sake of 5 euro or 50 euro depending on when it was registered

Thanks Dermot. The vendor took fantastic care of the house and gardens... There are some small issues on the survey, but the septic tank is the most worrying to me. You would expect some issues with a 1950's farmhouse so I was expecting stuff to arise. I just hope ther is some way for us to still get the grant. We haven't signed yet of course. All is in place, just house insurance and solicitors to do their thing next. EA is very annoying, not turning up when supposed to etc, so having to ask questions by email etc. Accused us of stalling when we were waiting answers from her to give to the bank! Feel like swinging for her lol! I cannot wait to get into this house..... Bank are moving fast too, so all down to their side now.......

So if they DID register it, could we get the grant as the buyers? After the deadline? I could find nothing about this in all my research!

Yes you will qualify. Get your solicitor to make that as a condition before closing and if it is available you will either get a receipt or a reference no which can be verified.

Thanks all. The Ea was meant to send our solicitor stuff weeks ago but as of last week he had received nothing..... Grrrrrr! Great to know we can still get the grant if we are obliged to change the system though. That makes a big difference. There are other things that need upgrading so basically trying to make sure we can actually afford to live in the house once we have bought it. Survey recommended ridding and CCTV on the pipes. Tere is actually a rats nest in there lol. House has been empty for a year or so, and is rural, so that is to be expected. Thanks again for your replies.

I do not think you will get the grant if it was not registered before the Feb deadline. I thought that that was one of the points that the Dept were emphasising.

Helpful post there Vietspiders. If you are bored you can always turn to YouTube.
Sorry, Dermott, I misunderstood. We will only get the grant if they registered it in time you mean? Plumber coming next week anyway so will have a better idea then. Thanks for all your advice.
