Buying Diamonds - Blue Nile

Hi,
I'm currently shopping for an engagement ( Diamond, without ring ) and have found that alot of jewlers have staff that don't know their stuff when it comes to the 4 C's. Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat. Sure they rattle them off but if you ask any indept questions they say things like . Ah , sure you don't need a cert or isn't it lovely an shiney.. Forgive me , but I'm not going to pay a few grand for something that isn't certified or from somebody that doen't have all the answers. I then came across an online jewler called Blue Nile. Has anybody dealth with them and how did you get on. They appear to know their stuff and show a copy of the GIA cert of each diamond. They don't sell any cheaper than the high street but it looks like you get a better quality diamond for your money.

Any thoughts on whether to go for an inferior diamond from local jeweler or a superior diamond from Blue Nile via the internet?

What consumer rights have you from this crowd if things go wrong and/or you're dissatisfied? I personally would be very wary of buying something like a diamond ring online. How would you intend getting it fitted for size?

Sorry, error in post-
I'm just buying the stone. They're a reputible company . They're online but they compete against Tiffany and Cartier. You have a money back guarantee for 30 days and it's independently certified by GIA which the Irish retailers could not offer.

I would expect any decent jeweller to offer a GIA cert. Certainly Appleby and Paul Sheeran in Dublin offer them. (I have nothing to do with these companies but have a certified diamond which was purchased from a Irish jeweller.)

A friend of mine bought an engagement ring from Blue Nile a couple of years ago. He and his wife are delighted with it.

You'd be protected by EU e-commerce consumer laws.

When I was getting engaged we looked at bluenile, great selection of styles and I found my perfect ring on there. Friend of mine recommended a guy on South Anne Street. So I brought the pic of the ring to him, and he made an exact replica for about 1k less than bluenile and about 3-4k less than Sheerans and Applebys. I can pm you his details if you like... Shop isn't full of spotlights and fab rings(he is actually more well known for his watch repair) but he is great. I have since got our wedding rings and recommended him to all my friends.

Well just to update. I went with the diamond from Blue Nile and am very happy with it. I took it to a Jewler in Dublin and the store valued it at 1200 euro more than what I paid for it. He commented that it was an excellent stone
