A friend who has worked in Scotland hopes to return to Ireland permanently this year. Mainly because of luggage and "bits and pieces" built up over several years he is thinking of buying a car in Scotland (rather than in Ireland) and drive home with all his goods. Is there a major financial saving in doing this? Is the procedure in registration taxing complicated? Also where would he stand in regard to any guarantee given by a Scottish garage. Any comment / advice would be much appreciated.

All the info is in the below link - most importantly they will need to have owned the vehicle for 6 months in UK to apply for an exemption from VRT and once imported they cannot sell the vehicle for 12 months without becoming liable for the VRT after the fact.

There will be a requirement to prove residency outside of Ireland for a period of time, can't remember off hand but think its 12 months.

He will have to own the car in the uk for min 6 months.

If he can work it out to get the exemption even after a year and a half of ownership your mate should be still be well ahead on a nice car.

A nice X5 or 7 seater should sell easily.
