Buying a merc privately?

I may be buying a 2 year old E-Class privatley for circa €38k in Dublin West
Could anyone suggest a dealer / mechanic that i could bring the car too in order to get a full check up done before forking out (a lot of money)

Car appears to be great value - has low mileage etc but I think all is too good to be true- besides the obvious does anyone know what I should be looking out for?

Just a suggestion but giving a rough location (North Dublin, Cork etc) may help get some possible names.

If you have doubts about the car or the seller then €40 would seem to be well spent on cartell (if something bad turns up you can walk away now), but even if it comes up all clear still no guarantee that everything is fine and dandy.

Could be worth calling into your local Merc garage and ask for a quote for the check. Hinting that it could also lead to a lot of future service work could get you a (more) competitive quote and the knowledge that it was checked over by trained specialists (probably worth it when dealing with an expensive car).
 
i'd bring somebody with me to check it out or ask the seller to bring it to a garage with you
 
If you want a 2-door E type - there is a '03 Merc CLK in Michael Moore's for about 42,950. It's being hanging around for a while and is in perfect condition(I know the last owner) Would be a better bet as you'd be able to negotiate some discount on it and get a dealer warranty.
It also elegance trim with auto box in good colour which are all important things to factor in irrespective of whether you are looking at an E class or a CLK.

If you are looking at a UK import check for clocking and accident damage.
 
Yip - going for an E220 CDI which is AUTO

Would the AA be the best people to check the car out or would i need a dealership where they have the relevant computer system (Diagnoste system?)
 
Can someone please tell me why you would want an automatic over a manual? and why are the manuals more difficult to sell. I would have assumed (for no good reason though!) that it was the other way around?

The people who buy these big heavy motors want the autos. I['m not sure exactly why...possibly a better gearbox than the manual? But the same rule applies to large Beamers and Jags.

One you get into slightly smaller cars from the same manufacturers manual is the rule and autos become much harder to sell.
 
for the price of the car the 350 or so with the AA is probably worth it.

A mechanic that I use from time to time is a former long service MB mechanic who has gone out on his own and is very very good, my dad's E270 cdi is brought to him all the time.
