buying a digital dvd camcorder in New York

Hi

Could anyone tell me if I bought a sony digital dvd camcorder in New York would it work in a dvd player here. I have been comparing prices and models etc on the B&H website and Amazon (UK & US). I have noticed that there seems to be different model numbers available there. Is that because they US ones are not compatible here?
