Buy car in UK, claim VAT back

I'm not in the trade, I'm not registered for VAT.

If I buy a secondhand car in the UK, and register it in Ireland, can I claim VAT back from the UK tax authorities ?

What about someone in the trade who is VAT registered ? Can they get VAT back.

Nope, not on a s.h. car I don't think. You can on a new car but you have to pay Irish VAT anyway (which is higher) so you lose out anyway (unless the new price in Euro of a car in the UK, less the UK VAT, plus VRT, plus Irish VAT is less than the cost of a new car in Ireland).

A private individual cannot reclaim VAT on a second hand motor car, regardless of what jurisdiction it comes from.

What about a dealer, someone in the motor trade , can they reclaim VAT on a second hand car if they buy in UK and register it in Ireland ?
