BUPA Vs Med1 Form

I was just wondering if there is any advantage in having health manager with BUPA when you can claim relief on doctors/consultants fees on a Med1 form? Also, you can claim for drugs on the Med1 (over the drug refund scheme) and not on BUPA. Am currently paying €60 odd a month for the health manager scheme and would like to reduce the premium by getting rid of the health manager option.

Many thanks for any input.

If you have private health insurance then you may be able to claim money back on certain medical expenses. You can then also claim MED1 tax relief on any qualifying medical expenses less any amounts reimbursed elsewhere (e.g. by private health insurance). Whether or not a specific private health insurance plan or option is appropriate really depends on your specific needs and it's difficult to generalise. In general I wonder about the prudence of insuring for small expenses such as GP fees etc. I only avail of it because my employer pays for the cover already. Otherwise I would not bother. In fact I would probably not bother with medical insurance for myself whatever about the wife and kid.

Why not try the hospital saturday fund as they have various different schemes whre u can pay as little or as much as you like.

Out of curiosity do you mind me asking why would you not pay for health insurance Clubman?

I don't mind paying the premium but don't want to be paying unnecessary money. What is the hospital saturday fund?

Because I reckon that it's not worth it for my specific circumstances given my risk profile etc. This issue (pros and cons of private health insurance) has been discussed at length several times in the past so it's worth searching out the relevant threads.
