bumpy texture -ceiling

I dont know what exactly this is called but the ceilings in our new to us house are all covered in this 'decorative' feature. They are all white and covered in a bumpy texture. My questions are-what is this called can anyone tell me and how can we get rid of it.

how can we get rid of it.

Rip it down and re plaster. Chances are it was done in the first place as the plaster/ceiling was in bad condition.

Steam. A bit messy trying to get if off but it does work.

Remember that going back a few years, asbestos was commonly used in these finishes. So check how old yours is first before attempting to remove it.

Leo-the house is about 14-15 years old.

You're safe so, they stopped using asbestos in the early to mid eighties.

I saw an ad for Polycell cover up paste (or something along those lines) at the weekend - would this sort of thing cover stippling??

I'd say you'd need to be very handy not to need a professional to sort out smooting a stippled ceiling.

I think the standard practise is to replaster over the stippling, rather than trying to remove it.
