I have trees and shrubs which were planted 9 years ago which the builders will be removing as part of a site clearout. I am specifically interested to know if it is likely that a hawthorn (one with dark pink flowers) and a mountain ash (rowan) will surive the removal which is to take place at the end of this month.

The cratageus sp.[hawthorn] and the sorbus aucuparia sp. [rowan/ mountain ash] are fairly durable trees. The whole key to tree survival is to as planning requires is to fence screen off to approx 2ish meters. This isnt exactly true all the same - One must ensure to avoid the root zonal area from being damaged and that the crown or main stem [fencing] is not damaged by machinery when working in or around the tree.

With all this in mind it is also advisable to 'crown raise' [prune to above head height tight and very clean to the central stem]tight to the centre so as mechanical damage doesnt 'really' damage the head.

They should be relatively well developed at this stage and are quite hardy/ durable specimen all the same.

best of luck and hope this helps!
