Budget Holiday with a Difference

We are trying to think of somewhere to go on holidays in July/August. I wouldnt mind going further afield than Europe and dont mind paying alot for flights (within reason) so long as accommodation and food are cheap at the destination. Any ideas?

Actually have just thought that Greece is somewhere we'd like to visit. Is it an easy country to get around if we hired a car? And can you visit the greek islands on day trips or overnights?

A Turkey/Greece combo might be good. Greece isn't the cheapest when you get there (compared to the likes of south east asia or south america). The ferries are pricey enough too. Check out the times for the ferries before you head off as some can take 12 hours - there would only be a few islands you can visit from Athens on a day trip I'd imagine.
