While in Budapest recently we were apprehended by ticket inspectors and had to pay c €30 [6000 hungarian forints] each in fines. :(
We had bought metro tickets for a journey which entailed changing to a second line but had bought single-line tickets in error.

The ticketing system is a bit complex so beware.

Apart from that we had a brilliant holiday.
 
We found the [broken link removed] a lot handier than paying for individual journeys when we were over there for a few days.
 
It covers more than the Metro. And you paid more than the cost of the 48 hour ticket in fines as far as I can see.
 
The system isn't that complex really. English-language ticket machines are in every station and you can choose between 'Single Journey' and 'Transfer Ticket'. Three or seven day passes can usually work out best for tourists.

Unlike in some other cities, the Budapest metro lines are strictly controlled and fines are commonplace if you don't have the right ticket.
 
When we were there a few years ago we regularly encountered ticket checkers on the trams too. Many of them were not immediately identifiable by uniform/hi vis jacket or whatever which was a good system for catching fare dodgers unawares.
 
We were charged €30 each [€90 in total] as I said, but we queried the exchange rate, calculators at the ready, and were given back €20. :D
