Hi, I've been unemployed since April this year and had been previously working parttime and claiming jobseekers for about 6months.

I've also been on opfp for almost a year I think and am now also on half rate JA - does anyone know if this entitles me to the btea?

I've looked it up but to be honest I can't fully understand if I need to be unemployed longer than I am before I qualify?
And SW need a letter from the college to say I've reg'd for a course but how do I register without the registration fee?
Are there special application forms in the college for this thing?
And I know this bits probably a bit cheeky -but are there travel expenses as the nearest third level college to me is in the next county!

All info welcome, Thanks :)

You must be on a qualifying payment for 9 months immediately prior to starting the course - as One Parent Family Payment is a qualifying payment, you may be okay.

You have to be accepted on the course before you can apply for Back to Education Allowance.

There are no travel expenses, there is a once-off payment of €500 as a Cost of Education allowance which is paid once your BTEA is approved.

Here's DSP's information leaflet on BTEA and other education support schemes

http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Publications/SW70/Pages/ABacktoEducationAllowanceBTEA.aspx

The information leaflet doesn't mention that you can't qualify for both the maintenance grant and BTEA, but you must apply for the maintenance grant in order to get your student service charge and tuition fees paid.
