I'm having trouble terminating my contract with them. I've switched to Eircom automatically and was expecting the two months tarriff to be refunded as it was an advance charge. Their customer services told me they do not refund advance charges at the end of a contract. They refer to internet terms and conditions.
These conditions are not static and could ahve read anything when I originally took out the service (talk, landline and broadband) two years ago.

Is it right that they can refuse to refund me in this way? I thought all advance changes for landline and the like were allways refundable at the end of the service. I was with them two years.

Why are you leaving them? Am with BT as well, having problems with email, is Eircom giving you a better deal?
There's no issue with getting an advance payment refunded - ring them and tell them that you want to speak to a supervisor. Tell him/her that you want your money refunded and unless you get it then you will complain as follows:
1. National consumer agency
2. ODCA
3. Small claims court
4. Telecoms regulator
5. Direct to the directors - you can get a list through the CRO for a small fee and you will find their home phone numbers and addresses thru directory inquiries.
