Hey,

I've a gift card from BT, used it about 12 mths ago and still have a decent wedge left on it. Only after reading the thread on the Lifestyle sports cards am I now concerned that because I have not used the card it will become invalid. I has assumed that these cards were like a debit card and could be topped up or debited as you pleased.
 
I know some companies charge a €2 administration fee if the card has not been used at all in 1yr. I dont think it can expire. There was some discussion here before Christmas regarding fees on giftcards for Dundrum S.C. but can't remember the exact details.
 
Gift vouchers can expire and the retailer is under no obligation to honour them if they do so or are lost etc. Some may do so on a unilateral basis but don't depend on it as it is not illegal for them not to. See [broken link removed]:

A voucher for Driving Lessons is valid for 3 months but consumer cannot avail of the lessons in the time period ?
  • It is at the sellers' discretion as to how long a voucher is valid.
  • If the seller is not willing to extend the time frame, that is their right.
  • Consumer could consider passing the voucher on to someone else, or selling it.

AFAIK BT's gift cards do not have any expiry date. At least it is not printed on the back like some gift vouchers so how is the receiver to know when it was purchased? I don't think you will have any problems using it.
 
BT gift cards do not have any expiry date. I used one after an inordinate length of time. I once thought that there was a 24 months limit on them, so when the two years was almost up on the one that I had, I checked it out with BT, to see if I needed to activate it then, and was told that there was no problem as there was no time limit on the use of same.
