Eircom phonewatch have a product called Eirlink that uses GSM messaging to contact the monitoring station - could be useful if you want to ditch the landline. Something like 282 euro to get installed. It's the same price per mth as standard monitoring if you don't have a line but I think it's an extra 10 euro per mth if you keep the line, which you will have to for BB unless you go wireless or cable.
