Hi all,

I'm looking for what the tax breakdown in the purchase & running of a car is.

This is what I have so far:
- VAT 21% on Petrol / Diesel (is this accurate?)
- Annual Motor Tax - now based on CO2 -> I took the e.g. of an 'average' car & thought I'd take Band C = 302 (For Band A = 104 & for G = 2,100)
- VRT = 2,000 (I put in a Renault Megane & got 2,851 in the ROS online calculation generator.

Am I missing anything??
Is there further 'hidden' taxes in fuel?
Or in the purchase of a car??

Thanks in advance

Tax on fuel is more than just vat.

there is duty and no doubt the new carbon tax.

Most of the 1.25 / L for diesel is tax.

Servicing attracts VAT

tolls now have vat.

Thanks Frank,
Can't believe I left out the Carbon tax!
Frank (or anyone) Any ideas how or where I could find out the breakdown of tax in a litre of diesel? Anecdotally, it does seem that it is a large portion of it..

The AA should be able to give you a breakdown of the cost of a litre of fuel.

You also pay a 2% (I think) levy on your insurance which goes to pay for the collapse of ICI !
