i have heard from several sources that Brazil is tipped to boom next year. There are so many spanish and portuguese developers buying up land in prime locations. Does anyone have any thoughts on an investment in Brazil? At the moment capital growth in the Natal area is about 20% per annum. This seems to be the area that people are talking about.

funny... every time I go travelling somewhere (That tends to be in vogue for travelling) the year or two after the place flies. I was in Brazil this year for a month and was very impressed. (PS the same happened when I was in Thailand, Oz, and China over the last 15 years). I think 'travellers' are the early adapters to a market which has just recently stabilised! Brazil has definitely been the place to go amongst this community for the last two years, I was just commenting a few weeks ago I think its going to go well!

If you want an area look at Buzios. Very cool, upmarket and an hour from Rio! Its going to be class!

PS: I am a professional investor for 18 mts now... (part time for 4 yrs!)

Besides considering it a "cool" place to go, are there any other reasons why you think that it's going to go well?
I thought that travel to Brazil was falling off somewhat after their rich Argentine neighbours saw a lot of their wealth wiped out a few years back and the Brazilians began slapping a $100 visa charge for visiting Americans?

I'd say you're probably about 50 years too late on this tip!

You'd want to make sure you get your head around property taxes for brazil. I spoke to a girl punting property in Brazil. I dont remember specifically what rate she told me but im quite sure the capital gains taxes are fairly harsh

I wouldn’t regard this as a tip whatsoever! Just that Buzios is a pretty cool place, upmarket and generally held in high asteem!

Brazil is practically 3rd world in places, so to go anywhere other than the top locations I would say is a really bad idea! (Aint that so I suppose in a lot of countries!).

If I was to buy I would buy there and I have been all over Brazil. Location is the FIRST thing I look at when buying and I am just giving my opinion on location! After location comes tax, rental take and Market (not exclusively or in order... basically due diligence/research!)... and lastly for me capital appreciation prospects!

I very rarely buy for capital appreciation...

Sorry Evolu, I picked you up wrong and thought you were suggesting Búzios is going to be the next big thing in Brazil.
I'd agree with you on your thoughts of it as nice location though as it is a sweet spot to spend a few days bumming around on a beach buggy, even if it can get a little crowded once the season really kicks off.
Don't know if I'd bother investing there specifically though. I thought the beaches further north were nicer, while at the same time a lot more remote.

..no Problem! I suppose I should have read your title properly... "tipped to boom"...

Brazil's economy is booming thanks to the commodities boom, driven mostly by Asia. This is very much a cyclical thing which we've seen before, and as surely as the economy booms it will again flatline at some stage - it's something to be aware of when comparing Brazil to other countries.
