The other night a guy(Foreign, romainian or spanish) turned up at our door selling oil paintings they were really good and I liked them so I bought 1 for 85 Euro-no frame. The guy said he sold to many people and this was an excellent price etc etc ...however he asked if he could take my mobile number so that when he has new paintings he can contact me to see if I want to buy more etc...now I'm thinking he has info that could be used to defraud me etc...knows where I live...has my mobile...am I being OTT here or has anyone else experienced the same at their front door?

To be honest I'm happy with the painting it looks nice, and more importantly my wife agreed when she seen it..however when she hesitated initially the price for the painting was 15 Euro!! I didn't get a sob story- just tried to tell me the same painting in a gallery was 700 Euro-Right!...it was only after the phone number exchange I became wary....by the way thanks for the links to the other previous posts...this website never ceases to amaze or inform me...

I got caught a few years ago with same scam (200 euro). These are not real oil paintings, just photocopies on canvas and touched up to look like oil paintings. When the guy called back about 6 months later with a new batch of photocopies I let him have it.

We bought one a few years back. I didn't like it but OH decided to help a struggling artist!! The guy was from Paris and in Art School here. He told us the painting was a copy as this is how one learns one's art. My OH asked for HIS mobile no. and his student ID. He had no problem supplying all of this. We checked him out and he was indeed, a student.

Just don't buy stuff from other than reputable sellers. Problem solved. Alleged scams/rip-offs avoided.
