Bought item on WWW, told by vendor noting more to pay, invoice & Intrum Justitia.....

I ordered an item a long time ago of the wonderful world wide web. It was approx $110. Anyway the package arrived VIA UPS and I rang and queried were there any charges, VAT etc to be paid and the girl on the phone told me NOTHING TO PAY and so I went about my business and that was that.

Months later an "OVERDUE ACCOUNT NOTICE" for €48 euro arrived on my door step. I was out raged at this as they had already said there was nothing to pay and so I wrote to them and never heard anything back.

Since this we are talking approx a year or close to it I have recieved leters from IJ demandind the 48 eurp plus charges cost etc etc. I have sent letters to IJ explaining that I am disputing the charge for obvious reasons. IJ have sent me a final warning letter in which they state they are going to issue legal proceedings against me, publish info in stubbs gazette etc, it will affect my credit rating and so on.

Where do I stand? I have no problem paying VAT, apart from the fact UPS said there were to be no charges paid in the first place, but the vat shuld be at most 25euro. Not 48. And neither crowd is willing to listen. Thank you.

You owe customs clearance charges, duty on the goods perhaps and VAT on the total. Ask for an invoice.

I asked for an invoice, its still isnt very clear of how they have arrived at 48 euro. apologies admin, I tried to edit title it wont let me.

Import VAT €32 (im guessing this includes import duty or 12.5% and then Vat of 21.5% which would bring it close to €32, it doest say this on the invoice), Disbursment fee €13.50 VAT 2.84, total €48.24 Original invoice was $110 and all delivery charges were paid from the purchase end. Anyway its downright rude the way they have gone down this road, stuck extra charges on after sayin there were none to pay.

It's an import/customs duty .... UPS are noted for this ... I have experienced this and ended up paying for something that was sent as a 'gift'.

I rang customs at the time to clarify ..... it had to be paid.

Unfortunately there is no way around this. In the t&c's of the website you bought from they will probably have a disclaimer saying they are not responsible for taxes duties in non US countries.

Basically anything you buy from outside the eu will have taxes & duties added when they arrive in the eu. In many cases when you have the taric code for a product the duty can be 0%, but on some items it is 14%. For small value shipments a general duty tariff of about 4% is applied across the board.

If it was UPS that stated that no vat / duty was due then its a different story, but it may be hassle proving it. - Best bet is to write to ups with receipt from webstore which should bring vat down to about €15 + entry charges of €13.50 + vat.
