Just seeking a little advice i moved into a house recently (about 1/2 months ago) anyway the lady that was living here before me must have had some financial issues as she recieved a letter from bord gais today saying there was an overdue balance of just under €1600 on the account, the letter goes on to say that they could not get access to the meter to disconnect it and that now they have to disconnect the supply at street level (there words not mine) and that they will bill me €785plus VAT just too add im renting and took over from what i thought was a friend

do i ring bord gais in the morning and explain the situation as i very much doubt there gonna be understanding as im sure the debt is now mine? has anybody got any advice as this is a very large sum of money :(

Landlords problem. Your contract should exonerate you due to the start date when you moved in. Alternatively you could pass on the new address of the person who ran up the bill. If the bill was addressed to the other person or the landlord then its not your problem

You just read the meter and put the bill in your name from now on and yes do ring Bord Gais to explain what has happened.

I would disagree in relation to opening Gas and ESB bills when you move to a new premises especially if you are renting. This way you know what is going on without getting stung for a bill or getting cut off.

tried ringing them today was on hold for about 10 minutes then got an answer machine said they will ring back within 24hrs but i wont hold my breath :( il try again in the morning

I rang Bord Gais from abroad yesterday afternoon twice and spoke to someone within 2 minutes both times. Coincidentally I found out I had a disconnect letter sent last August, there was a miscommunication problem and no bill has been paid since January. I'm amazed at their tardiness in cutting off people and this is a very large bill.

before i moved into my own house, i was renting too and when i moved into the last apt. i forwarded all bills to my landlord without opening them first. same day i moved in, i took meter reading called esb (we didn't have gas but process should be similar), gave them my move in date, personal details and the meter reading on the move in date. i confirmed the whole lot in writing again and never had an issue with them. i'd say bord gais has a similar way of processing new customers? send them a fax, that way they have it in writing, with your signature and you get a receipt confirmation too which means they can't deny ever getting such info from you ;) (and it's cheaper than sending it by registered post)
