Boosting signal from wireless router

Is there anyway to boost the signal from a wireless router. Unless I am very close to the router the strength of the signal is at its lowest or at zero which is very annoying. I am using a Netgear router, not sure which model, I also use it for VOIP.

Are you sure that the router is located in the best position for dissemination of the signal and not blocked by anthing nearby? Are you sure that the antenna/connection is not damaged in any way? Does the signal strength behave the same way with all wireless enabled devices? Are you sure that there are no major sources of 2.4Ghz interference nearby (e.g. neighbours' wireless LANs, certain cordless phones, certain baby monitors, TV digisenders etc.)?
