Hi All;
Our Boiler is an outside modular boiler that is just outside the utility room door. Over the last few weeks it keeps cutting out, and each time it does I have to open the bolier and hit the RED reset button(it works fine then). We had a guy look at it and he serviced it, but could see nothing wrong with it. The oil tank is full etc.
The only thing he did say was that the oli tank should be raise up a bit (but this wasnt a problem before)

Any ideas what could be causings this?..
Some of the radiators needs to be bled, but would that cause any problems?

Boiler is 2 1/2 years old
Cheers

Did you run out of oil before you filled up the tank?

If so, it could be that the sediment at the bottom of the tank is to blame for the repeated boiler mal-functions. It will sort itself out in a few days but in future try not let the oil run out completely.

The control box on the boiler is the box with the red light. there is one philips screw holding this on to boiler. the screw is on the right hand side. when you loosen this screw, the control box slides forward. look at the box's underside and you'll see a little white plastec object, its a photocell, look at the eye of it and clean it if its dirty, very common lock out cause. This problem has nothing to do with thermostat.

Thanks a million for all the replies - Thanks folks, will try this tonight - getting a plumber to look at this is like waiting for the lotto

Had a similar issue with my gas boiler. Had a specialist technician come out several times. It eventually turned out to be the ignition cable to the spark thingy. Not saying this is your issue but the point is boilers in general have a 101 interlocks and failsafes anyone of which can cut out your boiler automatically. Your technician has to try and pinpoint which particular interlock is the offender. This is the time (money) consuming bit. My best advice would be to source a technician that is qualified to service your particular make of boiler, at least that way he would have knowledge of typical service issues.

hope that helps

We had a guy look at it and he serviced it, but could see nothing wrong with it.

If he serviced it properly he cleaned and or changed the photocell so if it was that causing the problem it shouldn't be happening now. Does your exhaust gases look very black or sooty?

How long does it stay on after its reset? 1min,ten mins?

Im in the sticks (Carlow), now the plumber came and cleaned the boiler out etc, buyt last nite it cut out again, so he reckons its a photocell or some jets(??)..Anyway he is coming out again...

The exhaust is clean as a whistle

Thanks for all the replies
