hi ray you buy a bmw engine diagnostic kit it gives off the code reading for why the engine light is on and you have to know what that code means in the first place and also you have to solve the problem as the engine management light will come back on.
your best bet is to go to a bmw specialist who will diagnose the problem and it will cost a few quid but not as much as a bmw dealership
also ray not all spurious bmw engine diagnostic kits work on bmw's but you if your serious why dont you google one or buy one from a automotive shop and they start off at around 100 euro's depending on the quality of the machine
