BMW e numbers

All,

I am a bit confused about the BMW e numbers they assign to their range.
can anyone explain what they mean?

My wife has a 2002 316i, so what e number is that?
The reason I ask is because I am looking for a cd changer on ebay and they quote the e number instead of the model ('02 316i), so I don't know which type of cd changer to get!!!

The E number is simply the Chassis number (the first couple of digits anyway)

They have to change this number with each model change.

The 2002 BMW 3series is called the E46.

The Chassis number on my car begins with a W, and does not contain the numbers 4 or 6!
 
I might have the chassis bit wrong but it is 100% the Model number !!

The previous one was E36, the new one is E90.

At least I can start to look for a compatible CD changer on ebay.
