Was told today by a representive in a BMW garage that the 5 Series BMW 520I is a 2.2 litre engine..

And that the only 2 litre engine available in the BMW range is the 3 Series 318 Ci is this correct?

Thanks
P

Can't reply to the specifics, but it is the case that several models have engine capacity not starting with the last two digits in the model number.

I presume if you are looking at a 520i petrol it is second hand as BMW no longer make a petrol 520.

All 520s from 2002 onwards have a 2,2 litre straight six cylinder engine. The older 520 had a four cylinder 2 litre.

The smallest 5 Series now made is the 523 which has a detuned version of the 2.5 l engine used in the 525i.

Yes that is correct, the 520i is a 2.2 and the 318ci is a 2.0. The 320cd is also a 2.0 although that of course is a diesel.

Hi

Out of interest, could you please explain this "detuned version" ?

Many thanks

All I know is that both the 523 and 525 have a 2.5 l engine but the 525 has more BHP. I think its the way the tuning or injectors are set up.
