BMW 5 Series Vs Jaguar X Type

Hi,

Looking at the BWM 5 Series 2.2 litre engine and the Jag X Type 2 litre... anybody have any experience or know off how economical these cars are to run and services.

A few people have mentioned that the Jaguar is a lot more expensive to run and it just eats petrol?

BMW is the better car, by far.

Neither will be cheap to run. The Jag (assumed petrol) is 2.1 btw.

If your considering a car this big and like to drive dont go for the petrol.....and dont go for the jag....BMW should be your no1 choice but test drive the 520d.......all the power of the 2l petrol withouth so many stops at the pumps.......

Yes and no. It shares the chassis and fwd tranny. Body and trim are different, as is the V6 engine.
 
Hi there,

These cars are in two different classes, the X-type is in the same class as a 3-series. The 5-series competes with either the S-type or the new XJ.

Anyway, I just bought a new 530 M-sport - it is nice and big, comfortable, sporty but not cheap to run - I can almost see the petrol guage needle moving left as I am driving.
As someone else said, do try the 520d, I believe it is a nice drive and I think it now comes with an automatic gearbox option.

The X-type is a smaller car and is based on the older Ford Mondeo chassis, in the same way as the new Saab 9-3 is based on the older Opel Vectra chassis.

A colleague drives the E60 520i, it is very refined, enough power as this is a light car, but he says with the Auto box it is also heavy on juice - approx €70 to fill and he gets about 30mpg.

Horses for courses. A 3.0 X-Type with all the options ticked will weigh in at about 90 K. A 520d without any options is just over 50 K. I don't see how the 5 series is a "far superior" car in this instance.

I do!!!. But maby I'm just looking at the price tag because the jag seems so much more expensive, 175% more expensive. I know which I consider the 'superior car' now.
 
A 3 litre X type with all the boxes -90K?
Worth like 33K after two-three years ? Probably less

At least the 5 series has predictable resale values and has consistently
been top of its class. Will be a joy to sale and service.

The more expensive a car, the more room for depreciation. A 140 K M5 will probably be worth about 50 K after 3 years. Or a loss of 90K.

An M5 will be better than any X-Type. Hence, you pay 140K for the privelege. But a well-specced X-Type will offer more comfort, luxury, safety features, and better performance than a bog standard 520 without any options.

Like I said earlier - horses for courses. I just disagree with the sweeping generalisation that

Nope - go to carzone.ie. Base price for a 3.0 X-Type is ~ 59K.

Start adding options - auto transmission, electric/heated/memory seats, sat nav, parking sensors, sunroof, 18" alloys, and don't stop there.....

Don't worry, you'll get to 90 K quicker than a 520 gets from 0-60

Huh were did the 3 litre engine come from??

I understand that the 2.1 Litre X Type Jag and the 2.2 Litre 5 Series 520i are in different classes...

The reason I.ve narrowed my search down to these is due to the fact I dont want to puchase anything with an engine above 2.2 Litre. And both of them are executive cars. (Not interested in the Audi, Saab or Mercs)

Price for 04 or 05 for both the Jag and BWM are comparatively the same.

  • The Jag costs less to run compared to the BWM.
  • Jag's interior is a hell of a lot better then the BWM.
  • Every second car on the road now seems to be a BWM
  • BMW has a slightly better resale value.
  • Cheaper to service a BMW then it is to service a Jag X Type.
  • Should be able to get a good price on a BMW 05 when the SSIA's mature.
This is were i'm stumped, guess I'll just have to go back to the drawing board.
 
I would opt for a BMW especially the diesel. The power output from the 2.0d is really good, the 535d is the best though!

Thats hardly apples with apples though is it?
Try comparing the M5 with an entry level X type similar price mis match and then which is the far superior car?
As previous posters suggest the X type is the entry level Jag and the 5, well isnt.

Ehhh.....I re-iterate my original point. There was a sweeping generalisation made:

I take "5 series" to be anything from a 520 to an M5.

Some 5 Series are (in my opinion) better than some X-Types (e.g. M5 vs any X-Type).
Some X Types are (again, in my opinion) better than some 5's (e.g. high end X-Type vs entry 520).

On the latter point, some people may feel that a 50 K BMW is "better" than a 90 K Jag. I certainly wouldn't agree with that, and obvioulsy neither would someone paying the extra 40K. (Why would someone pay 90K if they could have a "far superior" car for a mere 50 K).

I disagee with the sweeping generalisation that "The 5 series is a far superior car". If 892896 meant it as an opinion, he's fully entitled to his opinion, just as I am to mine.

I just can't accept that every single 5 Series ever built will be better than every single X-Type every built.

Why comparing entry BWM with high end Jaguar or vice versa? surely, better to compare either entry-entry or high end-high end.

BTW, did or do you own a 5 series or Jag X-type, or did you drive either for few weeks/months? or do you get your statement from the press?
