Hi All,

Has anyone used this site, or does anyone know someone who has purchased from here? Anyone who has read my previous post will note that I am currently looking for an engagement ring... well, I've falled for the oldest jewellers trick in the book and fallen in love with a "better" cut of diamond than we can really afford (quoted €9,000 for a beautiful diamond in Newry).

Now have done a quick comparison and the "same" (comparable cut and clarity - slightly bigger size, which doesn't really matter to me) diamond is "only" €3,850 on bluenile.co.uk.

With a bit of role reversal, the boyf says it's not romantic to receive a ring through the post. Plus we are supposed to be going to amsterdam next week to pick one out. However, I am more nervous of buying over there than I would be buying over the net.

Anyway, I'd welcome opinions of bluenile.co.uk, whether positive or negative!

I'm not sure I would trust an online ratailer for someting this expensive. I find it hard to believe that an equivalent diamond to your €9000 one can be bought online for less than half that much.

Bluenile.com gets mostly positive ratings on but most people rating them don't seem to have compared like with like either.

I think personally that some things (e.g. expensive clothes, diamonds, etc.) need to be handled and inspected before being bought, which does not suit online eCommerce sites.

Since an engagement ring is such a milestone product, which you will be showing off to all and sundry, buying it online sounds like a gamble too much to me.
 
Also, remember that the most important factor in the quality of a diamond is the QUALITY of the CUT.

i.e the ring in Newry may have the exact same cut(shape), colour, carat and clarity on paper as the ring on the web, BUT still vary hugely in quality.
What I mean is that a master diamond cutter can cut the diamond at the optimal angles (calle Ideal Cut), allowing the maximum amount of light to be reflected from the ring, making it appear more sparkly.
If the exact same stone was cut by a lesser stone-cutter, the ring could appear dull and lifeless, since the light entering the ring is being absorbed by the ring and reflected out the base or the sides, instead of the top (called shallow or deep cut).
A "Fine" cut is also satisfactory, but not as good as an "Ideal" cut.

To check out the QUALITY of the cut of the ring on the web, ask for all the measurements (e.g. ratio of Pavilion to Crown, size of Cutlet, ratio of table to diameter etc). Ask specifically for
  • crown angle
  • crown height
  • pavillion angle
  • pavillion depth
  • cutlet
  • table size
  • girdle thickness
If it is a round stone, it is very easy to find on the web, the measurements to give optimal reflections.

Another factor is whether the stone has "Flourescence". This is a reaction between the light's energy and the diamonds atoms, causing the diamond to glow (perhaps slight blue colour). The jury is out as to whether this is a good or bad thing. Generally a lower quality diamond could benefit from some flourescence (more glow), but a higher quality diamond is better without flourescence.


I'd advise, get all the details from BOTH the shop in Newry and the web. And also if you buy a diamond in Amsterdam.

Best of luck - you'll be diamond experts by the time you've decided on the ring!! :)

the following are the grading rangles for an well cut 58 facet brilliant cut (round) diamond :

Table percentage - 57% - 64%
Depth percentage - 60% - 63%
Girdle - very thick to thin, faceted
Cutlet - pointed or none
Polish - very good
Symmetry - very good

Thanks for the advice guys... I was actually comparing pretty much like with like (I hope). Bluenile offers GIA and AGSL certified diamonds, and they also have their own ideal cut range, in which you can see the grading report on the net before you purchase. They also provide all measurements.

I was really just wondering about the practicalities of the purchase. I know that buying from the web is infinitely different to seeing it first in a jewellers.
