I've being looking for some black-out blinds for a bedroom in my house. Its a typical semi-detached built in the 60s - similar proportions to thousands of houses around the country.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've gone into most of the well known home furnishing/DIY/curtain chains with the intention of buying an off the shelf fit yourself blind, but none in any shop are large enough to fit my windows. The window in question is 6ft 4in wide. The largest size in stock in each of the shops was 6ft (c.180cm).

Some of the shops said you could get them custom made etc. etc. at much greater cost and hastle, but I dont want to go down this route if it is possible to get them off the shelf.

Now, I would have expected to have some difficulty getting the blinds if I had some atypically sized windows, but, as I said earlier, I live in a typical semi of a size and style that is extremely common in the greater Dublin area. Therefore I would have assumed that there would be a huge market for selling blinds that fit the windows. Whats more, it isnt even the largest bedroom window - one of the others has a 7ft wide window!

It seems to me that the large chains are only catering for the apartment market and recently built houses which are generally of smaller proportion than your typical mid-20th century semi. But, there are 100,000s of semis? Why not cater for them?

Anyone know of anywhere that sells 6ft 4in or 7ft wide black out blinds?

To be honest I don't think you will get them off the shelf. If you use a specialist blinds company as opposed to a retail shop, the price difference won't be that great.

The quality is also much better- readymade blinds have a cardboard roller which won't last as long and I don't think you will ever get a straight side to the blind when cutting to size.

If you are based in Dublin, what about Kavanaghs in Ballyfermot. REally nice accomodating staff and as far as I know they will make to your measurements.

Hi, there is a guy on ebay who sells 7ft wide blinds for £42.99 in 10 colours and they are blackout, I`ve bought 2 normal blinds off him and they have been top quality and delivery is quick. I have the same problem in my house, it was built in 1890 and the kitchen window is over 6ft, there was no way I was going to have them made not at the price they charge so I checked out ebay and found these, have a look.
