Birth and death announcements

I was just talking with a colleague about announcements in newspapers. I’ve always noticed that when referring to notices of deaths it tends to be in the Irish Independent, whereas birth notices are more common in the Irish Times. Is this just my perception, is it true, and is there some historical reason for it?

Never noticed any bias between the two papers in question towards either births or deaths. Are you sure about that?

Pretty much. I was looking for a particular death notice recently and we had to look for someone who receives an independent in work rather than the rest of us with times.

On a proportionate basis, relatively few rural death notices are listed in the Irish Times. Birth notices are a custom that has failed to make any sort of impact, as yet anyhow, among the Indo's "plain people of Ireland" target market.

A Cavna man once said to me that Cavan people always die in the Indo, only Foreigners and Dubliners die in the Times.
