Bill received after 7 years

A friend received a bill from a solicitor in relation to work done 7 years ago. This is the first time the bill has issued and they have explained it was because of an error in accounting software. Do they have a legal right to look for this money now. I know it would be statute barred if an invoice had issued but not sure when this is firsts time bill has issued.
 
Surely the first question should be does she agree that she owes the money? If so, would she not pay it?
 
It was in respect of representation in an case in relation to car accident and he thought the solicitors fee was covered before he received his insurance settlement.
 
It is statute barred and unrecoverable. Their hard luck.
