What could the above indicate in a 2005 Diesel Passat, or any car for that matter. After the initial burst of smoke, everything is fine. Occurs regardless of outside temperature.
Cheers

Has the car been chipped ? This causes over-fuelling and may be a cause.
Could also be an Engine Temp Sensor fault.

All I would do is take it for a good hard drive, revving it high through the gears to try to burn off any carbon build up as RS2K said and then maybe get an 'Electro Diesel' place to hook up the diagnostic computer and see what shows up.
