bidding on a house already sale agreed

A friend of mine really wants to buy this house but discovered it just too late and it had just gone sale agreed. She is prepared to offer what she suspects is a good bit more than the price the house went for.
She rang the estate agent to put in an offer and was told in no uncertain terms the house was sold, in fact she was more or less verbally abused, the estate agent got quite irate and was asking for her details so he could "look around for you".
Is he obliged to communicate the offer to the seller? what can my friend do to put an offer in on this house, it may very well be too late but she still wants to try.
 
Apologies, mistake in the last post. The house is still very definitely only sale agreed.
 
Sorry, just copped that post. Should've seen it before putting mine up. I hope it's not the same house, if it is then no wonder the estate agent got a bit irate!
