My mother house is nearly 50 years old. She has asbestos gutters on the house. They are leaking in various places at the joints. At each join there is a bolt and some silcone type material. What is the best way of repairing them? Is there any product on the market which would be particularly suitable for this repair work.

I understand also that if any of these gutters broke/cracked during the repair work that they cannot be replaced easily. Is this true

Cracked asbestos is a health hazard. Disposal could be costly. Not sure if repair is advisable or indeed possible.

Any repair is going to be temporary asbestos is very dangerous and you should wear a very good face mask when anywhere near the gutters You may be able to put flashband at the joints and ensure good adhesion by very gently heating the flashband before you apply it.but be very careful

I have seen a material which can be used for patching up gutters etc. It's a flexible adhesive sheet which you can cut to size and stick over any cracks etc. Exposure to UV light then hardens it so that you can drill through it, paint it etc. It's expensive but looks like it could be a good patch-up for your situation. I've seen it in Woodies so I'm sure it's widely available.

Soft blue asbestos is very dangerous; hard white asbestos is nowhere near as dangerous unless you inhale the dust from drilling it.

Wear a mask and get a second person with a water mist/garden hose on the job to keep any dust down.
Waste company will charge about €500 per ton to take away and it must be double bagged.
Good luck.
