Best type kitchen tiles?

Need to pick tiles for the new kitchen (if they ever finish building it!!!). Will have cream units and I want creamish tiles also. Question is really what type are best. We don't want to spend a fortune but will spend whats necessary to get the right thing. I'm thinking very flat tiles rather than bumpy ones would be easier to keep clean. Whats best though - ceramic, porcelan, travertine (what are they?) - anything better? Must be durable, easy to keep clean and as soft as possible to preserve babies heads! Thanks.

Have you tried talking to any of the tile showroom reps? I found when I could not make up my mind about floor tiles that they were excellent for advice. Perhaps you should call into some of the more reputable suppliers and sound them out.
