Best time to book flights/hotels New York

I want to book flights and hotels for a stay in New York in April.
Might there be sales in January where I could get better value?
Or does anyone have any tips for cheapest way to do it?

Sooner rather than later.

My experience of booking flights to USA over the years is that there is value on certain unpopular dates such as Good Friday, St Patrick's Day anf 11 September.
