Best route driving from Donegal to Youghal?

Hello
we are travelling on Saturday from Donegal to Youghal for a week.
Anyone do this journey recently? Is through the midlands my best option?

If it was me ..

- from the Donegal town side of the county, I would come through the midlands.
- from the Letterkenny side, I would head for Dublin via Omagh and then the motorways to Cork city. Though, as discussed on another AAM thread, once you're on the motorway, you better need not to have to stop for a break.
