Hi, am in the process of relocating to Cork and am not too familiar with the area, looking for new developments on eastern side within easy access to the airport...have been doing a little research into 'Granary Court' in Midleton and some New Dev in Carrigaline and Carrigtwohill...any opinions on any of these areas, or any of the new developments located there??..Could really do with some local knowledge on whether these areas would be a good investment. Thanks

Re: Best Places to Buy on outskirts of Cork City??

I live in Carrigaline and i love it. It's en minutes from he beach, airport and city. There are lots of plans for the town aswell. I've lived here for the last four and a half years and find it a great place to live.

Re: Best Places to Buy on outskirts of Cork City??

If you're looking for easy access to the airport, you should consider Douglas / Donnybrook / Carrigaline / Ballincollig rather than the eastern side - in my opinion.

Re: Best Places to Buy on outskirts of Cork City??

Thanks Guys, my budget is below 350,000...looks like it'l have to be a small two bed apartment in those areas for that money...anyone any ideas on Midleton...would it be a bad idea?...Im young and would hope for some sort of a social scene??

Re: Best Places to Buy on outskirts of Cork City??

If u are interested in carrigaline then maybe passage west , raffeen that area would be of interest to you

i live near passage and there has been some houses on the market for under the price u gave
I think if u can at all u can get more than an apartment for your money
esp as some houses seem to be on the market for a lot longer than normal know
carrigaline depending on the side u live on can be a bit of a bottle neck in the morning but it is a nice area and only a short drop from say crosshaven if u want to get away from it all and escape to the country as they say
Note also though passage area is lovely but the road from passage to City or exit to the South link does get busy in the morning
and this trend will only continue when there are plans to redevelop passage in the next few years as the docklands area of it get redeveloped
If anything passage is prob a good area to buy as its neighbour Monkstown is very expensive but then it always was i am told , another nice area but i would say in this area u would find it hard to find a property under 350
maybe try daft.ie or my home.ie i think home.ie has a map and u can see the houses etc around the area good way to start
If u're move is more long term
School wise Passage is getting new primary school, there is a secondary school there already
Re Carragaline i 'm not as familiar but i guess there are similar facilities there as well i know shopping is alot better in carragaline with dunnes and now lidyl (think thats how its spelled ) finding their way there
Passage Shopping ! well u're better off to head to carragaline or Douglas
hope this info helps

Re: Best Places to Buy on outskirts of Cork City??

sorry earlier post about map its actually on www.daft.ie
and the other site was myhome.ie , however there are loads of search sites on property

Re: Best Places to Buy on outskirts of Cork City??

Thanks so much Janedoe, that was very helpful..im going to view some developments in carrigaline and am taking a look at the Granary Court Development in Midleton, have read lots about the hopeful future development of Passage so I will look into that area as well...If anyone out there has any info about Granary Court in Midleton or what Ovens is like or any other new developments in those areas I would really appreciate some feedback Thanks again

Re: Best Places to Buy on outskirts of Cork City??

Ovens might be a bit far out for you, although good road (South Ring).
What about Wilton, house prices have come down recently. Very central. You'll get a 3-bed semi for under 350,000.

Re: Best Places to Buy on outskirts of Cork City??

Hi Siobhanin,
I am living in Cork for much of my life.
My advice would be don't rush into buying anything until you have lived in Cork for a few months. You will get a feel then as to where you like and where you don't. Work colleagues will also give you plenty advice.
Like the others mentioned, use myhome.ie and daft.ie. That will give you plenty information on houses/apartments. I also think you should look at purchasing a house rather than an apartment if you can. Up to you of course.
As regards social life, living in wilton would be a good bet for a young person with lots of young people and easy access to city centre. The airport is nearby . If what Camel says is right, that prices have come down, then check it out.
The pros of Midleton, Glounthane, Passage, Carrigaline and Ovens is that you can get a lot more for your money but socially may not be as exciting.
Again, my best advice would be take your time. Have a good look around. There are plenty of good areas.

Re: Best Places to Buy on outskirts of Cork City??

near the airport you can get a second hand in Grange or Donnybrook or else look to Carrigaline. the journey would be a doddle on the back roads.
I agree with the notion of living here first though.

If you like hurling, Midleton would be the place to go.

I lived there for a while and everybody I met either played hurling, talked about hurling, went to hurling matches, bet on hurling or any combination thereof.

Not sure if standing at the side of a field and shouting "Come on Killeagh" is your idea of a social scene, but if it is, Midleton is the place to be.

Re: Best Places to Buy on outskirts of Cork City??

Just in relation to middleton and the social scene. I have cousins living there, and one was recently bemoaning the fact that theres no social scene in Middleton. She is a 25 year old single girl and is finding it very hard to meet anyone, as its all the same local ejits in the same local pubs. her words not mine! she finds the cost of going out in Cork prohibitive. and theres not much else to do there other than to hang around the local pubs. but then again, I suppose the same is true for any Irish town!

Re: Best Places to Buy on outskirts of Cork City??

If she does not like hanging around pubs every Friday and Saturday night and is looking for something else to do...she should probably emigrate!!

I have lived in Midleton for the last 3.5 yrs now and have to say it is a very pleasent town, fantastic places to eat out, 15 min drive to east cork beaches... 15 to 20 min drive on dual carrageway to Cork City.

I'm originally from Wilton and the differences are the price of getting a taxi into town & home again....But if your plan is to go out to pubs/ nightclubs 4 times a week maybe you show look at the city centre.... I tend to go out twice a month....booked taxi fare is €40 ( collects you at home to go out and collects you in City to go home)...which is great on busy nights in the city to know there is a guaranteed taxi waiting for you..... where as with Wilton you could speed walk home after a night out in 30 mins or €8 taxi.....but if your going to live there your socialising would really be mainly done in the city centre rather than in the suburbs....and I know that my family have told me whom are still living there that traffic has become awful in the mornings and evenings...

One thing I like about midleton is that it is a small town of aprox 25,000 PE that has every thing (including a new proposed rail link supposed to be in operation 2008/09), a really good vibe as compared to some other "towns"/ Commuter suburbs that have lack of services/ infrastructure serving them and have heavy traffic problems and roaming teenages with nothing to do!!

I would recommend you should Look at it... and see for yourself..... I guessing your not going to buy somewhere without actually checking it out properly anyhow....

Ps. if your looking at property websites for houses in Midleton.....I'd forget about places that come up saying Killeagh, Midleton, Whitegate, midleton & Cloyne, Midleton as these are a further 10 to 15 min drive from Midleton further away from the City.

Thanks a million Vinnie, really appreciate the advice am going to do lots of spinning around for the first month or so and get a feel for the different areas !

You could try Riverstick or Belgooly only 5 mins from the airport and seven from Kinsale.

Applying the Dublin approach to commuting, have you tried looking for a house in Cahir or Cashel?

Cahir or Cashel?.......!!!! Why would one do that??? commutting madness!! she did say they wanted a social life too...I know someone who works in Cork Airport but lives in Kilarney...1hr 30min comute each way every day...I personly do not see the logic....Belgooly.....very small village...lots of new development...

would not recommend Midleton. grand for young families loads of faciltiies but for single girl i found it hopeless, ended up going out in Cork and bringing the car every time. twas a bummer.
