Best place to rent in/near Dublin

Hi,

I am currently making plans to move to Dublin from Manchester, UK and am looking for some advice about the best place(s) to rent when I get over there as I don't know where to start; would appreciate any info at all really.

I'm single with no kids etc and will need to commute to the city centre for work. Otherwise it's just the usual information such as things like bars, restaurants, shops, travel networks etc are important, as is somewhere I can walk my dog (who'll me making the move with me!). Because of the dog I would prefer to rent a house too, but can be flexible on that one (landlords allowing!)

Am "happy" to commute for up to an hour into the city - well as happy as anyone can be, but needs must ;o)

This question could result in a never ending debate over which side of dublin is better!! Personally speaking as a northsider, as much as i love it, id prefer to commute from "the southside" into town! Your answer all depends on whether you want to rent on your own or share! I love ranelagh in dublin 2..easy enough to get to town, has plenty of shops and pubs and has parks for walking the dog nearby..as well as a ~10-15min drive to sandymount strand/beach! Renting a house by yourself i would say would cost €1400 pm +, renting a room in a house/apt possibly €650 upwards! The list really is endless...

Thanks for the speedy responses guys.

Budgetwise I'd probably be looking up to 1300 euro a month tops but if I can get an apartment where I'm allowed a dog then I'd take the cheaper option.

I've been looking on the forum and am erring towards Lucan etc but am open to suggestions. Heard nice things about Ranelagh too.

Ideally I would like to be based somewhere that's going to be easy to get into and out of the city from on a weekend too - assuming that's the best place to go out (again, open to advice as I only know the city from several visits).

I live in Lucan but if I was in your boots I'd rent somewhere in walking distance of town. It's nice to be able to stroll around to galleries/exhibitions/museums etc. Nice to be able to pick different pubs and restaurants and immerse yourself in the "buzz" of the city. Lucan would suit a family better.

I would like to be somewhere I'll be able to meet new people etc as will be moving on my own, so social element is important I suppose therfore close to the city would probably be best. Any particular areas to look at/avoid?
 
I was also going to suggest Ranelagh, nice spot, great for walking dogs and you could socialise in Ranelagh itself or head to city centre very handily. Rents are expensive though, and very competitive to secure places, plus I'm not sure whether it would suit as you might need a house with a dog. Another option might be Firhouse/Ballycullen, close enough to city centre and great walks as beside the Dublin mountains.

Ranelagh is nice, close to luas, other areas to consider would be Milltown, on the luas line also and good green area!
 
Ranalegh would be my first choice, lots of bars and restaurants, close to city centre. Rathfarnham(near the village) would be my second, I used to rent there and loved it. More likely to allow a dog and there's a huge park nearby.
Where in the city centre will you be working? This can make a big difference to your commute time?
 
Will be working in Dublin 2 probably, around Fitzwilliam Street/Place (hopefully, fingers crossed etc).

I'd have a look around the LUAS (Churchtown) or DART (Raheny/Malahide). The Clare Hall area on the northside (Cheaper than Ranelagh) is really well serviced by buses into town (every 10 mins with some buses plus nitelink) also as well as being beside a DART (I think) and has a 24 hour Tesco nearby.
 
there are areas that will not be great for a single person (assumption!) to move to in Dublin and I would suggest Lucan wpould be one of these areas. I woudl suggest trying somewhere like Malahide, great pubs and restaurants but also great social activities with tennis, rugby, sailing etc all bang in the centre of the village. Is about a 30 min dart ride to city centre and usually plenty of rental accomm available. Also as it is on the coast, plenty of space to be walking your dog
 
DRUMCONDRA on the northside is the equivalent to RANELAGH on the southside.....but it is much cheaper......prices from 900 to 1200 euro per month.

Its only 20min walk to the city.

Enroute to the airport too...which suits you when heading home for weekends.

Good bus and train service too
 
I forgot to mention also my impression of Malahide is that it has a vibrant social scene and a lot of pubs and a village feel akin to Ranelagh but interestingly a late 20's to 30's demographic. Maybe I'm wrong. but thats' been my impression of the place.
 
Well, I'm over on Thursday for a couple of interviews so am going to check out a couple of the locations you've all mentioned.
