Sorry if this has already been answered already but I can't find it. My wife wants to buy a basic type of ipod mainly for storing foreign language tapes and some music. Anyone recommend an ipod that might not be a brand name but does the job just as well and doesn't cost as much?.

Ipod is a brand, so what I think you are asking is for a good MP3 player. There is plenty out there. Myself bought the bf a year ago a small mp3 that does the job, he gives it the same use as your wife will be (trying to learn spanish on the way to work!!). Can't remember the brand, but it's standard, USB type, easy to upload the music, tapes etc on it..Any good sound store will offer you what you are looking for, expect to spend around €75 (the more capacity the more expensive they will be).

As Cati said, there are plenty of excellent MP3 players (MP3 is the name given to the way the sound is stored/compressed, in the same way a picture can be .jpg or .tiff) on the market. The iPod has simply been the most successful of these, mostly down to excellent branding and stylish looks (apple managed to hit the right product with the right looks at the right time - and have been laughing all the way to the bank ever since).

If you call into any electronics/tv/sound shops (or even Argos have a wide selection to give you an idea of the different options available) they'll have a wide range to pick from. If you chat with the staff they'll happily take you through the different sizes (memory - how many songs it can hold) and features on offer.

If it’s simply for learning the language a fairly small sized memory would do. The more expensive ones (~ €300) are that price for the huge memory available. People now hold their entire music collections on portable MP3 players.... but if that’s not what you’re looking for you can find far more affordable solutions.

At the risk of sounding biased, while there are may MP3 players out there, the Apple iPod is widely regarded the best for the following reasons:
  • Very good technology (ahead of the curve in some areas e.g. video support as standard on , but not perfect, e.g. still no built-in FM radio)
  • Excellent sound
  • Class-leading design and User Interface
  • Class-leading PC / Mac software - iTunes - the easiest to use and most feature rich
  • Excellent on-line music store - iTunes Music Library
  • While not the cheapest brand on the market (you get what you pay for etc.), the range is broad enough to have reasonable choices at each price point
