Hello,

As title says, have a car that is 11 years old and burning a bit of oil. is there any grade of oil that someone could recommend to reduce the oil comsumption?

cheapest you can get if your burning it... No oil is going to fix the ware on an old engine.

Lidl doing 5L 10W40 Semi-Synthetic for about €15 at the moment.. I would use it in that car... you can trust the Germans for quality.

What you need to do is to add a tin of Bardol or equivalent oil to your next oil change. This is a thick treacle mixture which should be added when the engine is hot. It helps to slow down oil burning as its of a heavier concistancy. Its down fall is, it puts more pressure on the starter motor when starting from cold. so a good battery is recommened.

We had a Golf that burned a lot of oil and we used to buy gallon of Duckhams in our local sidestreet garage for around € 13 .

However we then discovered a friend that never throws out the waste oil when he services his car , and he gratefully gave us this used oil to use .

If your engine is burning oil , go for the cheapest option possible imo .
