Being a landlord in Germany

hi,

we are considering buying an apt in Germany as investment, which we would hope to rent out to cover mortgage. Can anyone point me in the direction of good information on tenancy etc in Germany. I understand that tenants are very well protected by law in Germany and I want to read some more about that area, before we progress further.

Thanks

Hi I can't answer your question but you may be interested in this. My brother has a property in Germany and another in England. Both of these are let through management agencies. One of the interesting things he has discovered is that in Germany the tenants have greater rights but they are also liable for the first couple of hundred euros worth of ware and tare damage (not sure of the exact figure). So while he quite regularly gets hit with repair bills from the house in the UK he never hears a thing from the Germany agency. The downside (at least over the last number of years) is that the capital appreciation has been a lot lower than in the UK. Hope that is of some help. Best of luck.
