Barcelona to Rome

We are thinking of flying into Barcelona and home from Rome approx 16 days later. (in July)

We would travel by train, bus and rental car between the 2 cities stopping at beaches, cities etc.

I haven't had a chance to look into it in detail yet - Is it too much distance to cover? Has anyone done a similar trip?

Taking Rental cars accross national borders on a one way basis tends to be very expensive (as the rental company probalby won't be able to rent the car you picked up in Barcelona again until it's been returned to Spain) .. so I don't think it would be practical to drive the whole way (in one car at least)

Train would be probably the best ... very good services along the mediterranean coast easily do-able in 16 days with a few stops (though you could spend a lot longer at it too)

Thanks. I checked Hertz.com and it is indeed very expensive to rent a car accross borders.

I think we will use a mix of trains and maybe 2 seperate rentals if we go ahead.
