I have been contacted by bxt and phone to advise my debit card has been compromised and to call a given number. I have used my card to withdraw a small amount of cash and to pay for groceries without any problems. Is this a scam or should I contact my bank and lose about an hour of my life for no reason?

to call a given number
What's the number?
Does it appear on any BOI website?
If not then don't call it.
Call one of their official numbers.

Thanks for all your inputs. I Called the official number and spent 10 mins waiting to get through to a human, who decided I needed to be transfered to someone else. Spent another 10 Mins listening to Mozart before hanging up. Card still working as normal.

Does BOI allow you to freeze/unfreeze the card on demand via online banking/banking app? My PTSB account allows this. If I was concerned that my card was compromised then I would probably freeze the card and only unfreeze it temporarily when I needed to use it before freezing it again until such time as I was able to talk to the bank and clarify/rectify the situation. If I couldn't do that then I'd probably reduce the balance on the current account associated with the debit card to the bare minimum just in case someone tried to clear the account out. And maybe also cancel the card and request a replacement.

If there are no suspicious transactions on your account, it's probably a scam.

Check it online as ClubMan suggested
