Hi

Friends of mine are struggling to keep their heads above water at the moment.

They are a married couple with a 2 year old child. He worked in construction and has been out of work for 2 years. She works 4 days a week. He gets 20euro assistance a week.

They are not entitled to anything due to the fact she works four days a week. They have been paying 500 euro a month off their mortgage which is all they can afford and now the banks have called them in saying they now have to pay 800 euro a month. Has anyone any advice on what they can do.?? Many Thanks

MABS is the start.

Take a look at the website as it has some useful advice as well as standard letter templates for use with banks. You have to engage with the bank and everything in writing to protect their interests.

Keep paying what they can afford.

Had they agreed the reduced payment? Had they discussed it with their bank or informed them that they were planning to reduce their payments as a result of their diminished income? If they did so, what was the agreement in place. That would be the starting point for any discussion with the bank. If they didn't, then I would suggest as well as contacting MABS to look at the MABS website and start compiling their financial information in the manner indicated, this will allow them to demonstrate that the demand from the bank is an unreasonable burden on them.
