Bank consent to sale

We went sale agreed on a house in the first week of August 2019. Some weeks after we had gone sale agreed and nothing was forthcoming from the vendors solicitors did we discover that the vendor had to get the consent to the sale by their bank. I have been told that the vendor is doing everything they can to progress matters and the consent will be furnished "forthwith" but that is no good to us. We have gone sale agreed on our house but only did so in November. We don't want to finalise the sale of our house without a house to go to - but if this consent to sale isn't forthcoming then we are not sure what to do.

Any tips on how to navigate this process would be appreciated!
 
From anecdotal evidence and what I’ve read/heard I’d personally run a mile and get looking at other suitable properties ASAP. Banks can take literally years to consent - that’s if they do. A lot say NO!
