Bagel cutter

I have seen Bagel slicers in the States but never seen any in Ireland. Does anyone know where I could purchase one in Dublin?

They are a contraption that you put the bagel into and then they slice in to the bagel. Sort of like a guilotine. Bagels are hard to cut evenly with a knife. A bagel cutter is a safer way to cut a bagel - and quicker!

Reckon I will buy one on Ebay.

The technique used in my local bagel place is effective.

You slice the bagel horizontally while holding it flat on the breadboard, and then finish separating it by cutting vertically.

I've used this technique on my bagels at home, and it is safe, and neat.

Yeah - go for the breadknife. :) Seriously, do you have a good bread knife? I'm not particularly deft, but I can slice a bagel pretty well with one!

A bagel cutter is just one more "specialised" item clogging up the kitchen drawer.

I'm much more interested in how to get good bagels than how to cut them myself!

You mean how to make them? There is an excellent recipe in a book called The Bread Baker's Apprentice, by Peter Reinhart.

Good bagels need to be boiled rather than baked. "Itsabagel" ship theirs in frozen from the States.

Personally I find Marks and Spencer do a good bagel - and reasonably priced too.
5 for €1.49 (and they often do 3 for the price of two)

Dunnes -4 for 1.99 - I think they are awful tasting

Tesco - 5 for 1.99 - not great, but not as bad as Dunnes

I just think a Bagel cutter would be less time consuming when cutting a few bagels if you are feeding a crowd!

Anyone seen one for sale in Ireland?

I'd imagine that somewhere like [broken link removed] in Chatham Street, D1 might have that sort of gadget. Or the people at Itsabagel might be able to advise. For stuff like that I'd always be inclined to check online, in particular eBay.

Thanks for all that. Have used the search facility on Kitchen Complements website - no joy. Migh pop in and talk to them though.

In relation to Ebay, see below, post no. 3.

All Rooms in Liffey St. are quite good for kitchen gadgets. If they don't have them they might know of somewhere that does.

Have checked there. They don't have them and didn't know where to get them! My search continues.....!

Will be in the States this Summer so will get one there if I have not bought one on Ebay beforehand.

Couldn't get your picture to load earlier on so can't see exactly what they look like but just wonder if coming thru customs from USA with one of those would be a good idea and presumably there's no problem with postage thru eBay?

I reckon there would be no problem coming through customs from US once I have it in the checked in luggage and not hand luggage.

Am not to sure whether there would be problems getting it posted.

Best bagels in Dublin have to be from the Corner Bakery in Terenure - they do boil them first. Best part of a Sunday morning for me! Would love to get a bagel cutter (ever since I saw one on the O.C., yes, folks, you could sell me anything!) but will refrain as I usually have one bagel once a week and sometimes not even that often. It'd end up in the cupboard with my "funion onion blossom" cutter!

Mad because some people can't see beyond a kitchen knife? .....It's called progress!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd be more inclined to call it conspicuous consumerism. It's obviously your prerogative if you want such a gadget but I (and others it seems) can't honestly see what advantage it gives over a normal bread knife which is suited to this and many other similar tasks. One could argue that coming up with a device that is more general rather than more specific is progress.
