Hello - I have recently got the widows contributory pension - 270 per week and 3 young children - 2 of them going to school [primary].

From work i get €127 per week after tax etc. Would I be entitled to a back to school allowance for my 2 children. Thanks very much for any advice...

a lone parent with a 3 children and an income up to 396 euro will qualify for the back to school allowance.
what age is your youngest?

Thanks Wicklow lass - my children are ages 3,6,8.

I just looked at the site you mentioned And think i understand that the upper limit is 375.30

so my pension [270] & wages [127] would put me outside the bracket by 22 euro...

Check with the Community Welfare people at your local Health Centre ...they're the ones who administer the BTS scheme

Talk to the secretay/principal of your childrens school also. They can apply for a book grant on your behalf - not a huge amount of money, but it's not means tested and every bit helps.

Also if they have a request for photocopying/arts materials type money - ask if you might have a waiver for this and if there is a book rental scheme in operation it's worth using.

This year's limit for a one-parent family with 3 children is 395.30, not 375.30 (the site may not have been updated as the scheme doesn't start till next week).

As mentioned earlier, you should make an application at the local health centre. If you are refused, you can make an application for an Exceptional Needs Payment, which will take all of your circumstances into account.

thank you everyone for your help. I will follow all your suggestions!

I might get under the 395.30 limit. It all helps. C.
