My 27 year old son, a qualified tradesman, has been receiving JSA for the last 6 months, he feels his future lies in going to College to get a degree as a mature student, he has applied to the CAOs for a number of College courses without disclosing this to Social Welfare. He feels he only needs to tell them if he is accepted for a course to qualify for the Bact to Education Allowance. I am worried that Social Welfare will view this as him taking himself off the Unemployment Register - who is correct ?

Cashier is correct. There is no need to inform DSP at this stage. When he is accepted, he will be taking himself off the live register. Do not worry. DSP will be happy he is progressing to BTEA.

Yes, there is no problem, you have to do this, otherwise you would qualify for BTEA in September but have no course to go to.
